Lightning Bolts: A Photo Document

Introduction
Bob Haro has been a mainstay within the BMX industry for just about 3 decades and still exudes the same enthusiasm for the sport since the day he won his first race. He has, since then, become successful in BMX as a rider, entrepreneur and artist. If you know your history you may have become familiar with his household brand, Haro Bikes. To commemorate Bob’s induction into the BMX Hall of Fame along with the “premiering” of BMX in the 2008 Summer Olympics, Nike has teamed up with Mr. Haro for an art collaboration/exhibition called “Lightning Bolts” which took place in the 798 Arts District of Beijing. Recreating his original BMX number plate as an artist canvas, Nike brought together pioneers, cultural icons, legends, and the future generation of the sport to celebrate four decades of BMX.
Objective
To create a commemorative “coffee table” type book containing large format, as well as, digital
photography printed on high quality semi-gloss paper. The book will also include anecdotal material
from BMX riders, legends and cultural icons. The piece will be hard bound with a matte black finish accompanied with a titanium inset for the cover’s title: “Lightning Bolts: A Photo Document.” Included with the book will be a DVD slide show with audio commentary from Bob Haro and Pop artist Michael Lau.

Structure

The basic format will be in book form, first in a limited edition hard bound cover which will have a 250 count run signed by Bob Haro and other riders and artists. Further down the line, depending on demand, it will be printed in trade paperback form. I’ve been given the task of designing the cover, as well as formating the layout of the photographic material and text elements. I will also have the opportunity to create graphical elements used in this publication. The photos I have received are in high-res RAW format from several DSLR cameras, in addition to several large format prints that have been scanned and sent to me electronically. I will be formating the material in Adobe Indesign CS3 and the finished product will be sent to a third party for printing, packaging and distribution. The DVD will also be made in-house. The entire book will be in black so that the photos will have a proper background to be viewed on.
