How to make a pattern in photoshop.

Here we’ll see how to create a pattern in photoshop which in return will allow us to create cool backgrounds and effects.

One of the most common and popular uses of patterns are for background slices. Which can create really cool effects and small file sizes which will load the page quickly compared to a large image for a background.

To create pattern you need to:

Create a new document of a small size, we’ll start with a 7×7 pixels for the example.

Make sure your background is transparent. Make a new layer and delete the first layer photoshop gives you. Now you have a transparent background.

Zoom in to the maximum allowed, pick the Pencil Tool make it a 1 pixel brush size, then select black as foreground color.

I’m making the famous diagonal stripe.

You can play with different styles and variations that you feel might make a cool effect.

Once you have drawn your pattern hit Edit > Define Pattern,

drop_menu

then enter a name for the pattern end press OK.

Now your pattern has been saved to your patterns palette. If you want to fill a layer with a pattern you simply have to hit Edit > Fill then choose Pattern in the Use Drop Down Menu and select the desired pattern in the Custom Pattern Box then hit OK.

Here’s a little sample of what you could achieve with a pattern.
