Swear Words in Text

According to Grammar Girl, it is okay to swear in text depending on your audience. If you know your reader is an adult it is just fine to swear, however, if you are targeting young adults, you can make adjustment to your text to take out the swear words but still give the same punch and meaning.

Here are some suggestions for modifications:

  • Drop the swear word all together
  • Implied swearing: [beep], or [beeping]
  • Use Grawlix: (*$#%!)
  • Replacement words: Jerk, poop, freaking, friggin, effing…
  • Asterisks: f***, sh**, b****
