How To Change Your Oil

Changing your oil can be a simple task that virtually anyone can do, even those who are not mechanically inclined, and can save you a lot of money, and you get exactly what you want. You will need the following things.

1. 5 Quarts of oil, synthetic is the best.

2. A new oil filter specifically for your vehicle.

3. A funnel, without one it can get messy.

4. Oil pan, gotta drain the oil into something.

5. Oil filter tool.

6. Wrench to go with the size of your drain plug.

First step, make sure the car has been off and cooling for at least four hours, engine oil can get hott and if you change the oil with a hot motor, it can burn you. Depending on what kind of car you might have, you may need to jack up the car to get underneath. Thats why this is not listed in the list of supplies. The oil filter is a cylindrical shaped piece sticking out of the side of the motor underneath the car, the exactly location will differ based on your make and model, but it’s usually accessible underneath the vehicle. The drain plug is near this as well.

The second step is to place the oil pan underneath the filter and drain plug. Unscrew the drain plug in a counterclockwise fashion, slowly at first to make sure the oil drains in a controlled flow. This usually takes about 5 minutes. Next, take the oil filter tool and position it near the bottom of the filter (where it screws on) as close as possible, where the opening of the tool faces the right side of the car, then turn the oil filter in a counter-clockwise motion (always remember, left loosey right tighty). Some oil will come out of here as well, place the oil somewhere it will not contaminate anything (the box fromthe new filter will work). After all of the old oil as completely drained away, put the drain plug back on and tighten it once over (too much and you may never get it back off) and put the new oil filter on. The new filter can be hand tightened.

The third and final step is to remove the oil cap from the top of the motor. It usually has a symbol of an oil can on it. Place the funnel on the inside and slowly pour each quart into the motor. Once all of the oil has been put into the engine, put the cap back on and tighten it. The old oil may be poured into the new bottles and taken to your nearest automotive store (kragen, autozone, pepboys, etc.) and be disposed of.

Congratulations, you have changed your oil.
