When I was a child, my house was the one place where I could let my imagination run wild. It was so big that I almost was never bored. Every room was different, and had a whole new adventure behind every door.
One day, my brother, Kyle and I were playing hide and go seek. He was hiding and I was counting. He chose to go upstairs to hide. I knew, because I had heard the stairs creaking as he went up them. When I was done counting, I yelled, “Ready of not here I come!” and ran straight upstairs to find him. My first thought was to look in our parents’ bedroom, but I thought he might know that I would look there, so I decided to check our father’s office instead. I ran up to the door and opened it. At first glance, nothing seemed amiss. Everything was as it normally was. My dad’s desk was still as messy as always. His chair had been pulled out, but I could already see that there was nobody hiding under the desk. I listened quietly and heard no sounds. Just as I was about to leave the room and check our parents’ bedroom, I heard a sound coming from the back corner of the room. It was a wheezing sound of some sort, coming from behind th file cabinet. A human couldn’t fit behind the file cabinet, so I knew that it wasn’t Kyle. After hesitating for a few moments, I moved in closer to investigate. As I approached the cabinet, I began to hear a scratching sound that now accompanied the occasional wheeze. I looked into the dark corner, but could still see nothing. After mustering up the courage, I bent over, grabbed the cabinet, and tried to move it. It moved surprisingly easy, and slid about 5 to 6 inches away from the wall. It was still dark back there, and the noise had stopped. I stood there for a moment, crouched, heart beating rapidly in my chest, waiting for something to happen. Suddenly, something leaped out from behind the cabinet and jumped over my head. As I turned to look, I saw a colorful green creature run out the door and into the hall. It couldn’t have been more than a foot tall, and had a bright orange crest on its green, little head. It had a long skinny neck, and little yellow claws. It’s tiny, feathered wings and long, feathered tail were tipped with the same vibrant orange as the crest on its head. A cross between a parrot, a chicken, and a liizard, may be one way to describe it.
After it had escaped into the hall, I fled in pursuit of the amazing creature. I screamed, “Kyle! Come out!”, to alert my brother and maybe have an eye-witness to this event. At first, he didn’t respond. So I shouted, “Kyle!” “There’s a bird monster out here!” “Come see!”. After a moment, the door to our parents’ bedroom creaked as it opened.
“Bird monster?” my brother laughs.
“Yes!” I said. “There’s a bird monster, and it ran down the hall!”.
“No.” “It’s not a bird monster.” he grumbled.
“If it’s not a bird monster, then what is it?” I yelled.
“Mama said, not to talk about it.” he replied.
I ran down the hall, and down the stairs, but I saw no bird monster. I looked all over the house, but saw nothing. I saw no parrots, or chickens, or lizards. Not even a mouse. When I asked my mother about it, she only replied, “I’m not going to discuss that”. That was all she would ever say. My father just ignored me alltogether.
I never saw that monster again, but I did see many others. Some friendly, and some of them ferocious. The scariest one yet was probably the “poisonous space octopuss.
My house had everything you could imagine. It was so big that you could find anything there. My house was as big as the sky.
