Mustang Sally

Joyce walks with her thumb out while Sally PLAYS her wooden flute.

JOYCE-Why’d you have us go this way? There aint no cars.

SALLY-I don’t think its legal to hitch hike and I would rather walk than get arrested.

JOYCE-Stop blowing that stupid piece of wood! It’s getting on my nerves.

SALLY-You gonna come see me ‘n the talent show?

JOYCE-Why should I? I got a front row seat right here.

Sally stops playing and looks down.

A beat up 1962 CHERRY RED CORVAIR pulls up beside them. HENRY, a chubby blonde with a rat’s nest of smelly hair and an infectious grin from ear to ear, opens the door and waves for them to get in. Both girls climb in the CAR.

Joyce looks for a place to sit in the back and sees that there is no seat. Joyce just sits on the floor of the beat up car. Henry sits next to her. CHUCK, the driver, is much older looking, pale complected, with long shiny black hair parted in the center. He looks up.

JOYCE-Hi. Thanks for picking us up, we’ve been walking for like miles. Groovy car.

Chuck looks into rear view mirror, raises his finger and seems to be moving them to the beat of the music, but there is no music playing. Chuck responds to Joyce by smiling into mirror then looks to his right at Sally and does the same.

SALLY-Oh, we’re going to our friends over that way.

Sally points past Circle K.

Chuck nods his head and smiles.

JOYCE (To Henry)-You know my boyfriend asked me to go steady with him and I’m going to see him. I think he’s going to give me his silver ring he got last year on his vacation.

Henry continues to stare at Joyce and smiling attentively.

Joyce returns his smile a continues explaining.

JOYCE -I’ve never actually had a steady boyfriend. I mean one that actually asked me to go with them. I asked them before but told me that it’s not ladylike to do the asking. Who cares?

Sally shifts her weight and pulls the wooden flute from her back pocket and sets it in her lap. Sally looks at the flute and then at the driver noticing that something is odd about him. Joyce continues to talk.

Sally suddenly feeling uneasy speaks to the driver

SALLY-We can get out here, or, or, or maybe at the corner.

Sally turns and looks at Joyce who is glad to have such a good listener in her presence.

SALLY -Joyce!

Chuck looks startled as his hands begin to open and close, forming odd shapes.

SALLY(pointing to driver) -I think its right over there. We can walk from here. Thank-you.

Joyce looks out her window.

JOYCE-No. I don’t think this is it.

Sally clears her throat, turns quickly to try a get Joyce’s attention with her eyes and shakes her head no.

SALLY-Right here!

Chuck has a look of confusion on his face then turns to Henry.

Chuck (mumbles)-ryte ear?

Sally pauses, looks confused, then over to Joyce who hasn’t noticed a thing.

SALLY-Yes, and thank you once again.

Both girls get out of the car, smile and wave as the car pulls away from the curb.

JOYCE-Man! You’re dumb, this isn’t even close. You want to clue me in on what just went down with you?

SALLY-Did you not notice that they were not talking?

JOYCE-The one in the back was.

SALLY-Oh yeah! What did he say?

JOYCE-Ah…I don’t remember.

SALLY-Joyce. They did not talk and they could not hear! That’s why they were moving their hands that way.

JOYCE-What way?

SALLY-You know like this.

Sally imitates how Chuck was moving his fingers.

JOYCE-NO figgin way. They were deaf? I just thought that guy was retarded!

Both the girls LAUGH hysterically as they walk the long road that lies ahead. Joyce with her thumb out and Sally following close behind PLAYING her flute.
