The reason I live in San Diego today takes me back about three years. I was raised in a place about four hours from here. Bakersfield was a pretty good place to grow up. I went to good schools and had a close knit group of friends. 2006 rolls around and I still hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do with my life. At the time I had been working for a hotel downtown and was getting too comfortable. I had looked at going to a music school but hadn’t made up my mind. After a series of unfortunate events, I ended up loosing my job at the hotel and was unemployed for about four months. This took a toll on me, my family, and my relationship at the time. I was in a funk that I couldn’t seem to get out of. Eventually my parents and I decided that it would be better if I moved out and found a place of my own. My good friend Mike let me stay in the garage that we had remodeled the previous summer. For a garage, it was actually pretty comfortable. We installed ceiling fans and even hooked up cable for the television. It was pretty much another room, and a big one at that. This was great for a while, I even got a job working with Mike installing plumbing in new homes. Regrettably, this job only lasted a month or so and I was out of work again with about 300 dollars to my name.
Luckily, I had made a friend at the hotel that I was laid off from. She had moved to San Diego and offered me a place to stay, and a job in a restaurant she was managing at the time. I arranged to drive down to check things out for a weekend. Needless to say I was hypnotized by the beach and everything going on around me. Having never been to San Diego before, it was pretty shocking to me. There was so many things to do and so many people my age I decided this would be a good, and refreshing move for me. I went home, packed up my truck with everything I could fit in it and drove back to San Diego. After a few weeks of being here, I was working, and finally finding some happiness being away from home. Eventually I decided that working eight hours a day should probably be a little bit more profitable for me if I was to have a place of my own. I thought long and hard about what I really wanted to do with my life. I had seen commercials for different design schools on TV and decided to research them. I stumbled across the Platt College web site and decided to give it a shot. Today I am just about finished with my associates degree and feel like I have a bright future ahead of me. This is still all kind of a big surprise to me looking back at where I was three years ago. I’m in school, have a great girlfriend, a nice place, and good friends. I’m lucky to have made it to where I am today and I’m looking forward to the future.
