How to do a card trick. . . with math!

Card tricks are always a party favorite. They can amuse and entertain as well as shock and amaze those who watch it. The simple trick I am about to show you can do all these, but it also relies on your dialogue with the audience to pull it off effectively.

All you need for this trick is a deck of cards

Make sure that the deck of cards has all 52 cards in it with no jokers.

Your first goal of this trick is to lay out 26 cards onto the table face up like so

You can initiate this phase of the trick by asking a few questions of the audience, for instance . . .

  • “How many cards are in a deck?” (52)
  • “Whats half of 52?” (26)

With them concentrating on the number 26, you lay out the cards. After laying out the cards, pay special attention to the 7th card you lay out

As you can see, the 7th card is the 4 of hearts. Now your job is to talk your audience into picking the 4 of hearts. You can do this with a series of questions designed to lead them into choosing it.

  • “whats half of 26?”(13)
  • “whats 13 minus 1?” (12)
  • “whats 12 divided by 3?” (4)
  • “pick 2 of the 4 suits”
    1. If they choose hearts and spades, ask them to pick between the two (if spades, then say all that’s left over is hearts)
    2. If they choose spades and clubs, ask them to pick between the remaining 2 suits (hearts or diamonds). If they choose diamonds, then say all that’s left over is hearts.

If you have followed these guidelines, then the audience will be convinced that they have chosen the 4 of hearts on their own, not because you directed them to it.

This next phase is crucial to the success of the trick. You must condense the 26 cards into a stack without disturbing their order, then put them underneath the un-delt cards. A simple way to do this is to condense the 26 into a stack, flip it over and then place the un-delt deck on top of the stack of 26

after you’ve turned the 2 stacks into one, you deal out the top 3 cards of the deck side by side

Tell the audience that these 3 cards what to each total the number of 10. For this example, the 3 cards delt were all 7s. so in order to total the cards to 10 you add 3 cards to each stack, counting out loud so the audience follows

  • face cards count as 10, so if they are one of the 3 cards you delt, you do not need to add any more to them

For the final step of the trick, you need to add up the 3 face up cards. In this example the 3 sevens add up to 21. If you’ve done everything correctly, the 21st card you deal from the top of the deck will be the 4 of hearts.

This trick will work every time , regardless of how many times you shuffle the cards. The 7th card in the stack of 26 will always show up in the end.

Enjoy!
